Roofing crew mid-replacement with ladders and staging in place

Once a roof replacement is scheduled, most of the planning is on the contractor’s side. A short list of things on your side of the project make the day go more smoothly, for your property and your household.

Move vehicles and clear the driveway

Roofing crews need room to stage ladders, materials, and a dumpster or trailer, so clearing the driveway and moving vehicles to the street or curb the night before helps the day start without a delay.

Protect what is directly below the roofline

Tear-off sends debris straight down along the perimeter of the house. Patio furniture, grills, potted plants, and anything else sitting close to the exterior walls should be moved further out or under cover for the day. Our post on what happens during tear-off and disposal covers what that part of the process involves, including the property protection steps we take before work begins.

Think about pets and noise, not just people

A roof replacement is loud, with tear-off, hammering, and equipment running for most of the day. Pets that are sensitive to noise often do better at a friend’s house, in a boarding situation, or at minimum in a part of the house farthest from the roofline. This is easy to overlook until the first hammer strike of the morning.

Check your attic beforehand, if you can

If you store anything valuable or sensitive in the attic, it is worth a quick check before the project starts. Tear-off can shake loose dust and debris into attic spaces, so a general tidy-up in advance is a reasonable precaution, especially for anything not in a sealed container.

Expect the timeline, not a guess

Knowing roughly how long the project will take helps you plan the rest of your week around it. Our day-by-day timeline guide walks through what a typical replacement looks like from tear-off to final walkthrough, so you are not wondering what stage you are at partway through.

Plan for the noise if you work from home

If you work from home, a roof replacement day is not the day for an important video call. Most homeowners either plan to be out of the house, or block off the calendar for the day the work is happening.

What we handle on our side

Evidence before opinions. The free drone inspection and planning happen well before your scheduled start date, so there are no surprises about scope on the day itself.

Property protection, before tear-off begins, on our side of the preparation.

A magnetic sweep after the work, catching stray fasteners before they become a problem for you.

A build you can watch. Drone updates during the project, so you know what stage things are at even if you are not home.

The short version

Clear the driveway, move anything fragile from directly below the roofline, plan for pets and noise, and know the general timeline going in. The rest is on us.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be home during a roof replacement?
Not necessarily, though many homeowners choose to be available at the start and end of the day. What matters most is clearing the driveway and protecting anything near the roofline beforehand.

How loud is a roof replacement?
Loud enough that pets sensitive to noise and anyone working from home should plan around it, especially during tear-off.

Should I move my car during the project?
Yes, moving vehicles to the street or curb gives the crew room for staging equipment and materials.

Will debris get into my attic during tear-off?
It is possible for dust and minor debris to shake loose, so a quick check of anything sensitive stored in the attic beforehand is a reasonable precaution.

How do I find out exactly how long my project will take?
